All About Elastics

Orthodontic braces consist of brackets and wires that are designed to apply consistent pressure to the teeth, thus causing the teeth to move into the correct position. In some cases elastics or tiny rubber bands are used to apply additional pressure to move teeth. In general, elastics are used for bite correction and for closing spaces between teeth.

An Overview of Importance

Elastics are an important part of your orthodontic treatment, making it essential that you learn everything there is to know about them.

If you are wearing braces that utilize elastics, our staff will show you how to attach the elastics so that the process becomes second nature to you.

It is important to follow all directions your orthodontist gives you about elastics in order to ensure your treatment go along as planned. If you fail to wear your elastics as directed, your progress can be delayed.

Wearing Elastics

In order to achieve optimal tooth movement, your elastics should be worn at all times unless your orthodontist tells you otherwise. When you visit our practice (whether it be in Cherry Hill, Deptford, or one of our other four locations) we will tell you how often to replace your elastics so they don’t become stretched out and ineffective.

If an elastic snaps or breaks at any point, be sure to replace it with a new one right away. If you forget which teeth to put the elastics on, please call our practice and we will remind you. And if you are running low on elastics, come by one of our offices (Cherry Hill, East Orange, West New York, Lawrenceville, Deptford, NJ and Langhorne, PA) for more, instead of waiting until your next appointment.

Do Not Wear Two Elastics Instead of One

Some patients double up on their elastics and wear two at night because they've skipped wearing them during the day. This is a very bad idea because it changes the force load and can cause unexpected tooth movements that are counter-productive to the goals you and your orthodontist are trying to achieve.

It is important to remember that improving your smile is a team effort. When you wear your elastics as instructed by your orthodontist you will be doing your part in creating a straight and healthy smile you'll be proud to show off.
