Botox & Fillers Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable serum derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It’s primarily used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your forehead and around your eyes and mouth.

The injections temporarily paralyze the muscles under your skin that cause your facial expressions, pulling your skin into folds. As you get older, your skin loses elasticity and can get stuck in the folds created by your smiles and frowns, which leads to wrinkles. Your skin relaxes along with the muscles underneath, leading to a reduction in your facial wrinkles.

At the New Jersey My Orthodontist locations, Botox and dermal filler injections are performed by maxillofacial surgeon Shadid Aziz, DMD, MD, FACS, FRCS(Ed). Botox injections usually take about 20 minutes, which includes the time it takes for your provider to examine your face and identify the best locations for your injections. The needle is very small, and most patients don’t report any discomfort.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are another injectable cosmetic treatment; however, these injections plump up loose or sagging skin with collagen or hyaluronic acid. Dermal fillers are often used to plump thinning lips and to contour your cheeks and chin for a more youthful appearance.

How is Botox used for therapeutic purposes?

In addition to using Botox to fight signs of aging, Dr. Aziz may use Botox injections to relieve jaw pain, headaches, and other symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and muscle spasms.

TMJ

Your TMJ is the hinge joint that connects your jaw to the rest of your skull. TMJ disorders cause pain and mobility issues in your jaw, which can make speaking and chewing difficult. When your TMJ issues are caused by a muscle spasm in one of the many muscles that support and move your jaw, Botox is often an effective treatment because the paralyzing effect releases the muscle spasm.

Bruxism

Bruxism is the medical term for grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw when you sleep. While mouthguards can protect your teeth, they don’t stop the grinding and clenching, which causes jaw pain and headaches. Botox can temporarily paralyze the muscles that clench while you sleep. This reduces your need for a mouthguard as well as other painful symptoms.

Headaches

Botox is FDA-approved to treat chronic headaches and migraines. When Botox is injected into the tissues and fibers involved with your headache, the injection also enters the nerve ending, blocking the release of chemicals that transmit pain messages and thereby relieving your symptoms.
