Braces Q & A

What are braces?

Braces are a classic orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth and misaligned bites, and one of the most effective ways to improve your smile.

Braces are fixed oral appliances made up of bands, wires, and brackets. The brackets are sealed to the front of your teeth, while the archwire is threaded through the brackets and held in place by the bands. When your orthodontist tightens your archwire, it exerts a small-but-constant amount of pressure on your teeth that gradually moves them into their target alignment.

What conditions do braces treat?

Braces treat many orthodontic issues, including:

  • Teeth that are crooked, overcrowded, or widely spaced
  • Overbite (upper teeth extend too far over your lower teeth)
  • Underbite (front top teeth lie behind your lower teeth)
  • Open bite (upper and lower teeth don’t touch)

Braces are a cosmetic treatment to create a beautiful smile, but they also restore function by fixing crooked teeth or malocclusion.

What different types of braces are available?

My Orthodontist offers a variety of braces, including:

Metal braces

These are the most common type of braces, and they’re made of high-quality, durable stainless steel. As orthodontics technology evolves, traditional metal braces continue to get smaller, more comfortable, and more attractive.

Ceramic braces

Clear braces work exactly like metal braces, but their brackets are clear, enabling them to blend in with your smile and making them less noticeable in your mouth. Clear braces are a popular form of adult braces.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are attached to the back (or tongue side) of your teeth, where they’re less noticeable. Lingual braces are the best option for patients who want to minimize the appearance of their braces during treatment.

Same-day braces

Same day braces allow you to start your orthodontic treatment before you even finish your first visit at My Orthodontist.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners, like Invisalign® and Invisalign Teen®, use a series of clear plastic trays to straighten your smile. They’re created using a computer-generated model of your smile and fit snugly and comfortably around your teeth. Like braces, clear aligners exert a small-but-constant amount of pressure that eases your smile into a better alignment.

When should I get braces?

It’s best to start thinking about braces as soon as your child’s final baby teeth are loose. At this point, their teeth and jaws are still growing, which can be a helpful tool in orthodontic treatment.

But even though it’s better to get treatment when you’re younger, adults can have orthodontic treatment, too. As braces technology improves, adult braces are becoming more and more common.
