Children's Orthodontics Q & A

How is children’s orthodontics unique?

Unlike adults, children’s teeth and jaws are still growing and naturally shifting in position and alignment. Children’s orthodontics takes advantage of this natural movement by gently and effectively guiding your child’s teeth into the proper alignment.

Adult orthodontics, however, have to move teeth and jaws that have already settled into an incorrect position. Children’s orthodontics have the benefit of delicately course-correcting your child’s oral development so that their smile can end up in the proper place on their first try.

When should my child start orthodontic treatment?

My Orthodontist and the American Association of Orthodontists recommend bringing your child in for their first visit when they turn seven years old.

Even though treatment for common orthodontic problems usually begins between 9 and 14 years of age, seeing your child early gives your orthodontist a head start on any conditions that might be developing and enables them to monitor your child’s tooth and jaw growth more thoroughly.

Early orthodontic treatment can:

  • Reduce treatment time
  • Decrease the likelihood of extractions
  • Save space for teeth that have yet to erupt
  • Make more room for teeth that are erupting into a crowded smile
  • Create better facial symmetry by manipulating jaw growth

Having the first visit at age seven also gives your My Orthodontist provider a chance to curb any harmful oral habits your child might have and teach them about good oral hygiene.

What conditions can children’s orthodontics correct or prevent?

With phase one orthodontic treatments, like palatal expanders, headgear, and functional appliances, your provider can successfully correct a variety of conditions, including:

  • Crossbite
  • Underbite
  • Crowding
  • Protruding teeth
  • Thumb sucking
  • Tongue thrusting
  • Mouth breathing

By tackling these problems early, the team at My Orthodontist can save you considerable time, money, and difficulty down the line.

What happens at my child’s first orthodontist appointment?

Your child’s first orthodontist appointment begins with a consultation to assess the health of their smile and establish their orthodontic baseline.

The team at My Orthodontist conducts a visual exam to analyze your child’s teeth, occlusion, oral musculature, and any possible skeletal deformities or irregularities. They might also order photography analysis or X-rays, too.

If your orthodontist thinks that your child would benefit from a particular treatment, they work with you to devise a plan that optimizes their oral health in the context of your unique needs, preferences, and budget. That might mean nothing more than periodic checkups throughout their growth and development, or it might mean fitting them with an oral appliance, like an expander or retainer.

Wherever your child’s orthodontic journey may take them, start it today by calling one of the offices of My Orthodontist. Alternatively, you can request an appointment online.
