Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign is a type of removable orthodontic appliance made from a flexible polyurethane plastic called SmartTrack® that was developed exclusively for Invisalign treatments. This thin, clear material fits right on your teeth and is virtually invisible. Regular use of Invisalign gradually straightens your teeth without the need for metal and wire braces or retainers and the restrictions that come with them.

Today’s self-conscious teens can also benefit from using Invisalign Teen® instead of braces, as the aligners are designed with special “eruption tabs” to make space for teeth that have not fully developed. Invisalign Teen also has compliance indicators that allow your orthodontist to see how frequently the devices are being used.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign aligners work much like braces do. They apply a controlled amount of constant pressure to your teeth, so they slowly shift into a more desirable position. At My Orthodontist, the team uses specialized computer software to plan and track the movement of your teeth from their current position to a better alignment.

The movement is broken down into stages, and each stage requires a fresh set of Invisalign aligners, one for the top set of your teeth and one for the bottom set. You must wear each set for at least 20 hours a day for two weeks each, after which you move on to the next set of aligners in the series.

This allows for a gradual movement of your teeth until they are in an optimal position, and you can stop wearing the aligners.

What are the advantages of Invisalign over traditional dental appliances?

The patented SmartTrack plastic gives Invisalign a number of advantages over traditional dental appliances, like braces. Some of these include:

Comfort

The soft, flexible plastic of the Invisalign aligners are less prone to irritate the soft tissues of your mouth like braces can.

Easier oral hygiene

Invisalign aligners are removable which makes cleaning them and brushing your teeth much easier than it is with braces.

Improved appearance

The clear, plastic material makes Invisalign aligners virtually invisible and doesn’t interfere with your smile.

Food freedom

Unlike patients with braces who may need to avoid certain foods that can get caught in the metal wires, when you use Invisalign, you’re free to remove the aligners during each meal and eat whatever you want.

Teeth-grinding protection

Invisalign aligners can also function as night guards if you clench your jaws or grind your teeth at night and can protect your teeth from excessive wear.
